Alcohol and Mexico are often viewed as synonymous, but the real heritage of the Cantinas has more history than we realize.
Pride and togetherness. Those are the elements that drive Mexican citizens to the heart of their heritage – the Cantinas. While Cantinas are – essentially – bars, it is more than the drinking that pull people in. The Cantinas are a place for leisure time, a place to meet friends, and even a place for business.
Whatever reason people have for enjoying a night at the Cantina, the true Mexican collective culture remains as it did nearly 690 years ago.
Every Thursday night is Cantina night. For visitors, there is a tour called the City of Good Living and Good Drinking Tour. It begins at 8:00PM and takes passengers via tram to the area's renowned bars. There are three different routes you can choose from, and a knowledgeable guide will keep you up-to-date on important facts and share drinking customs that have been a part of the Mexican heritage for many generations.
The tour includes a complimentary drink on the tram, and tours need to be reserved ahead of time.
