Bagan was the capital of the Pagan Empire from the 9th to 13th century. It is to be found in the Mandalay region of Myanmar (formerly Burma). During the Empire's apogee, it constructed 10,000 monasteries, pagodas and temples.
Unfortunately, of the original 10,000, only about 2200 remain. The city of Bagan has thus been classified as an archaeological zone to help preserve the region that has become the main draw to travelers coming to Burma. Some equate it to the Angkor Wat in Cambodia.
Among the temples and stupas that should be on you r traveling radar include; The LawkanandaLawkananda, the Ananda Temple, Shwezigon, Mingalazedi, Bupaya Pagoda, Dhammayangyi Temple and many more.
Whatever else you do in Southeast Asia, make sure you travel to the city of Bagan and its archaeological zone. There is no better way to learn about Buddhism than getting right where it all began.
Oh...and make sure you have a camera with extra memory cards. You will want to capture every sight you see on camera.
