Popular destinations in Antarctic includes; Lemaire Channel, Deception Island, Neumayer Channel (Port Lockroy), King George Island, Half Moon Island, Paradise Harbor, Penguin Island, Livingstone Island, Hope Bay and Dry Valleys. These entire destinations are concentrated on an area called the Antarctica Peninsula.
Among the things you can expect to see on an excursion deep into the icy landscape include foreign animal species such as rats, mice, chickens, rabbits, cats, pigs, sheep, cattle, reindeer etc. that have been introduced by the scientists. You can also expect to see native animal and bird species such as albatrosses, petrels, skuas, gulls, terns, penguins, seals, whales and many more.
Antarctica is dotted by a series of glacial mountains and gigantic icebergs with sparse moss and lichen vegetation here and there. It is a good place to enjoy some ice fishing, ice skating, skiing, hiking, sightseeing etc. If you are a photography buff, then this destination will probably give you more variety than most.
You do not want to be catching cold. Pack warm clothes, hiking boots, and some warm food before exploring the Antarctic mainland. While at it, make sure that you arm yourself with a clearly marked map and a compass. The icy landscape can get confusing…trust me; this is one place you do not want to get lost…help may not be very near. If you have a guide, then you are lucky. You will see all there is to see and knowing the direction of beautiful places to visit will be someone else’s problem.
