Mahali Mzuri

Maasai Mara, Kenya

Since opening in 2013, Mahali Mzuri states that more than 80% of its staff come from the local community, many of whom have been with the camp since its opening.

One of its most impactful initiatives has been the decade-long development and support of a local school serving 300 students between the ages of 3 and 15. Contributions from the property and guest donors have helped fund a dining hall, computer lab, accommodation facilities, sanitation infrastructure, school meal programs, and a rainwater harvesting system designed to help combat malnutrition and improve long term student wellbeing.

The camp has also expanded its sustainability initiatives through renewable energy development, including a solar farm project intended to provide 100% of the camp’s energy.

Zambezi Queen

Chobe River, Botswana

Each guest contributes to the property’s Community Development Fund through a small conservation levy, helping fund long-term projects identified in collaboration with local communities themselves.

One of the collection’s most impactful initiatives has been its ongoing support of Mbalasinte Combined School. Recent projects have included the installation of water and plumbing infrastructure, classroom renovations, reconstruction of the boys’ dormitory, improved sanitation facilities, a new student hostel, school fencing, gardens, and the development of a new library and learning spaces for students.

Ol Jogi Conservancy

Laikipia, Kenya

This conservancy employs approximately 300 staff members, more than 70% of whom come from surrounding local communities. Unlike many conservancies, Ol Jogi allows staff families to live on-site, meaning roughly 1,000 people currently reside within the conservancy itself. Ol Jogi operates an on-site primary school serving 230 children with free education for staff families, while also funding secondary school, college, and university bursaries for students from neighboring communities.

Beyond the conservancy itself, Ol Jogi’s Wildlife Education Program has hosted more than 100,000 Kenyan school children since 1986, helping educate future generations on wildlife conservation and ecosystem preservation.

The conservancy also runs a medical dispensary with a full-time nurse providing free medical care, medication, vaccination support, maternal and child healthcare education, and family planning resources for both staff and neighboring communities. Ol Jogi also supports women’s empowerment initiatives focused on entrepreneurship, diversified income opportunities, healthcare education, and infrastructure support for women within surrounding communities.

Additionally, the conservancy uses holistic grazing systems based on Allan Savory’s land management model, hosts up to 1,500 community cattle during drought periods, and trains local herdsmen in sustainable grazing practices designed to reduce soil erosion and restore degraded land.

Singita Grumeti

Serengeti, Tanzania

Through its partnership with the Grumeti Fund, Singita supports the protection of approximately 350,000 acres of wildlife habitat in Tanzania’s western Serengeti. Conservation efforts include anti-poaching ranger teams, ecological monitoring, aerial surveillance, scientific research, habitat restoration, and specialist canine units used in wildlife protection operations.

Additionally, more than 90% of Grumeti Fund staff are Tanzanian nationals, helping ensure that tourism revenue creates long-term economic opportunity within the region itself.

One of Singita’s most recognized initiatives is the Serengeti Girls Run, an annual women’s fundraising event supporting girls’ education and empowerment programs throughout rural Tanzania. A comfortable three-hour drive from RIOgaleão International Airport (GIG) leads you away from the rhythm of city life and into the heart of where Cariocas (locals) escape for rest and rejuvenation: a port town called Armação dos Búzios, Brazil. From the outset, as our journey unfolded along winding coastal roads between ocean and lake, each kilometre felt like a transition into something slower, more soulful. Along the way, we passed through local towns with main streets lined by bakeries pouring the freshest coffee aroma into the air, while fruit vendors displayed Brazil’s impeccable delicacies beneath vibrant tropical sunshine.

At last, when we arrived at Casas Brancas Boutique Hotel & Spa, it felt as though we were being welcomed into a long-time family’s home. Indeed, this beloved property, a cornerstone of Búzios luxury hospitality for over five decades, began humbly in the 1970s and has since evolved into an elegant boutique retreat. Still owned by the same family, it continues to celebrate its history and Mediterranean-inspired charm, proudly standing today as part of the Virtuoso luxury travel collection.

Once inside, we were instantly transported to another era, embraced by country-house style decor that radiated comfort and ease. The following morning delivered the true enchantment, as pulling back the curtains revealed a breathtaking panorama: elevated views of Búzios port stretching a full 180 degrees, framed by endless glistening ocean and a gentle sprinkle of fishing boats dancing along the horizon. We gazed out, as our oceanfront suite featured a private porch complete with a daybed, swing, and coffee table, and at that moment, I truly couldn’t tell whether we were in Búzios, Portofino, or Mykonos.

Before long, Casas Brancas became our sanctuary. As a result, we barely ventured beyond the boutique hotel’s embrace, as it proved to be the perfect haven for connection and relaxation. Thoughtfully curated spaces invited us to linger: subtle nooks with couches, shelves of timeless books, classic board games, lounge chairs tucked beneath gentle shade, and a refreshing pool nestled beside the succulent garden. And then there was the cuisine… a revelation! Freshly caught tartare, chrome-coloured tataki, house-made traditional breads, and banana gnocchi — a culinary selection that genuinely rivalled anything we had tasted anywhere else.

Naturally, as part of our Virtuoso experience, mornings began with breakfast on the veranda perched above the sea. In addition, we were gifted with one of the many highlights of our stay: the complimentary couples’ massage, an entire getaway in itself. The spa experience featured custom garments, a thoughtful selection of aromatherapy infusions, herbal teas, and delicate biscuits, all enjoyed within a couples’ massage room that felt like a cocoon of shared serenity. Afterwards, we debriefed our experience in a quaint cool jacuzzi overlooking the ocean, letting the moment linger just a little longer.

Each evening, turndown service awaited us with tea and biscuits, a ritual that felt both comforting and indulgent. One of my favorite aspects of the stay was the beach service. JANEIRO elevates the iconic Rio beach experience by providing chairs, umbrellas, and towels within moments of arrival, while the attentive beach team remains available for drinks and food. Every logistical detail is handled, allowing you to simply arrive, exhale, and enjoy the Brazilian coastline in its most effortless form.

What truly distinguishes JANEIRO Hotel, however, is its ability to create moments that feel both intuitive and magical. We are admittedly obsessed with fresh coconut water, especially the jelly inside, so we purchased two coconuts nearby and called the front desk hoping the team could help us open them. Moments later, there was a knock at the door. It was Mariana, one of the guest experience specialists, holding two freshly opened coconuts with straws, smiling as she explained that she had already been on her way with coconuts for us when she received the call asking if she could help open ours. It was a small yet unforgettable moment, the purest expression of five-star hospitality. This is service at its highest level, knowing your guests, anticipating their preferences, and delivering delight without prompting. Later, Mariana helped us set up our television to watch a Netflix special, all while we relaxed in plush robes overlooking the ocean.

Scotland in Style: A Personal Journey Through Heritage, Coastlines, and Luxury

This summer, I returned to my homeland of Scotland for the first time in 11 years — bringing my two teenage children along for the adventure. While I was coming home, my family embraced the opportunity to show us Scotland as if we were seeing it for the very first time. From luxury countryside escapes to coastal walks steeped in history, our journey reminded me why Scotland should be at the top of every traveler’s list.

Perthshire: Countryside Luxury, Hidden Gems & Timeless History
Our trip began in Perthshire, an area known for its rolling hills, grand estates, and serene woodland. We stayed at Crieff Hydro, a historic resort hotel offering both elegant accommodation and a wealth of activities. Set amid 900 acres of Perthshire countryside, it’s a destination in itself — the perfect blend of old-world charm and modern leisure, with everything from horseback riding and archery to tranquil spa treatments. A highlight was the unforgettable experience of meeting miniature Highland cows, their gentle nature and iconic looks making for the most memorable of encounters.

We also tried something wonderfully unexpected — gold panning in Almondbank. Standing in the shallow waters, swirling gravel in our pans, we experienced the thrill of searching for tiny glimmers of gold, a fun and immersive way to connect with Scotland’s natural resources and history.

Our Perthshire adventures also took us to Huntingtower Castle in Perth, a fascinating fortified home with over 500 years of history. Walking through its medieval halls and climbing to the rooftop for panoramic countryside views was like stepping back in time.

From there, we explored Stanley Mills, a beautifully preserved heritage site on the River Tay that tells the story of Scotland’s industrial past. We also visited The Hermitage in Pitlochry, a woodland paradise with towering Douglas firs and tumbling waterfalls — a truly rejuvenating escape where the crisp, clean air feels like therapy for the soul.

The Fife Coastal Path: From Leven to Lower Largo

Scotland’s coastal scenery is unmatched, and one of the best ways to experience it is on foot. We walked from Leven, where my family lives, to the picture-perfect fishing village of Lower Largo. Famous as the birthplace of Alexander Selkirk — the real-life inspiration for Robinson Crusoe — the village is home to a statue and charming cottages linked to his story. Our walk ended at the welcoming Crusoe Inn, where we enjoyed a drink overlooking the water.

Along the coast, we made a stop at Ruby Bay in Elie, known for the tiny red semi-precious stones — Scottish “rubies” — that can be found along its shoreline. Kneeling in the sand and searching for these sparkling treasures felt both playful and rewarding, adding another unique memory to our coastal adventures.

The seaside town of Anstruther is known for some of the best fish and chips in Scotland, and it didn’t disappoint. Enjoyed by the harbour with sea air in our lungs and gulls calling overhead, it was a reminder that simple pleasures can be the most indulgent of all.

A Day at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival
No trip to Scotland in August would be complete without experiencing the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the world’s largest celebration of arts and culture. We travelled there on the newly launched Leven to Edinburgh rail network, a scenic and efficient route that made the journey a pleasure in itself. The train whisked us from Fife’s coastal charm straight into the heart of Scotland’s vibrant capital.

Once in Edinburgh, every street seemed alive with performers, music, and the buzz of creativity. From impromptu street theatre to ticketed shows in historic venues, the energy was electric. One of the most memorable moments was when my son was chosen to be a volunteer for a street performer’s act — a hilarious and lighthearted experience that had the whole crowd cheering and made the day even more special for him.

One of my personal highlights was Queensferry, with its iconic Forth Bridge — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Industrial Wonders of the World. It’s also near where my father once worked at Rosyth Dockyard, making it an especially meaningful stop.

From Queensferry, we took a boat trip to Inchcolm Island, home to the remarkably well-preserved Inchcolm Abbey. The island is also a haven for puffins during nesting season; while they had already departed, the views, history, and peaceful atmosphere were captivating.

Kigali: The Gateway to the Wild

We began in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital — a city that blends modernity with deep cultural heritage. North South Travel arranged a private guide for our visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a powerful and essential experience that gave context to Rwanda’s extraordinary transformation.

Later, we checked into the elegant Radisson Blu Hotel — a modern, luxury property. One thing to note: the breakfast was phenomenal!

The next morning, we were driven through the lush countryside to Musanze, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park. The highlight of our visit was an annual festival called Kwita Izina, an international event focused on the naming ceremony of new baby gorillas born among the endangered mountain gorillas. This ceremony is one of the most important events of the year, attracting international celebrities, monarchs, members of the United Nations, and wildlife conservationists.

Volcanoes National Park: Into the Mist

Nestled among the mist-shrouded Virunga volcanoes, this national park is home to one-third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Tourism Rwanda ensured we had permits well in advance — they are limited to just 96 per day, making this one of the world’s most exclusive wildlife encounters.

Early in the morning, we joined a small, intimate trekking group and set off with our expert ranger guides. The forest was alive with birdsong and damp with dew. It was a rigorous hike, and our guides cleared a path through the dense jungle with machetes, rewarding us with a sudden clearing in the jungle.

The Encounter: Eye to Eye with Gentle Giants

We encountered a troop of gorillas, including the majestic Silverback and his family. A silverback sat confidently nearby, his eyes calm and wise. Juveniles tumbled in the vines. To our surprise, one juvenile came toward us, did a little twirl, then beat his chest to communicate his presence. We watched in silence — no more than five meters away. For one precious hour, we were guests in their world.

That place is Antarctica. I have always wanted to travel to Antarctica and now I had the chance to travel there aboard Aurora Expeditions’ Greg Mortimer. It was a trip that would not only change the way I see the world but also touch my heart in a way I never expected. This is the story of my adventure in Antarctica.

Setting Sail: A Dream Begins

The journey began at Ushuaia, Argentina—the southernmost city in the world. As we boarded the Greg Mortimer, I couldn’t help but marvel at the ship. Sleek, modern, and designed for exploration, it was the perfect vessel for our expedition to one of the most remote and beautiful places on the planet.

I had been anticipating this moment for months, and now that I was here, I was so excited. For me travelling to Antarctica is not just a trip; it's a journey into the heart of the unknown, following in the footsteps of legendary explorers like Ernest Shackleton, Roald Amundsen, and Robert Falcon Scott. These pioneers braved unimaginable hardships to chart the frozen continent. There’s something deeply thrilling about connecting with that spirit of discovery and resilience, about standing in a place where history was made against all odds.

As the ship pulled away from the dock, we sailed through the Beagle Channel and took in the spectacular views of snow-capped mountains and glistening waters. The air was crisp, and the horizon stretched endlessly ahead. My dream of visiting Antarctica was finally happening.

The Greg Mortimer: Comfort Amidst the Wild

Life on the Greg Mortimer was more luxurious than I had imagined for an expedition ship. From our comfortable cabin with panoramic windows that offered jaw-dropping views to the gourmet meals served in the dining room, this was an expedition with a touch of class. It wasn’t long before we realized that this was not just a journey to a destination, but an experience to be savored in every moment.

The expedition staff—naturalists, geologists, ornithologists, and marine biologists—became our guides and storytellers throughout the trip. They were a wealth of knowledge, sharing the fascinating history of Antarctica, its unique wildlife, and its delicate ecosystem. Every day, we gathered in the expedition lounge for briefings, learning about the places we would visit and the wildlife we might encounter. The excitement in the room was contagious, and each day felt like a new chapter in a story we couldn’t wait to unfold.

The Wonders of Antarctica

As we crossed the Drake Passage, the ship rocked with the rhythm of the sea. I had read about the notoriously unpredictable waters of the Drake Passage and wondered if we would experience the “Drake Shake” or the “Drake Lake”. For a small ship of 130 passengers, the Greg Mortimer was relatively stable thanks to its groundbreaking X-BOW® design—a game-changer in expedition cruising.

Unlike traditional ship bows that slam into waves, the X-BOW has a distinctive forward-sloping, wave-piercing shape that cuts through the water more smoothly. This reduces the vertical motion (pitching) and slamming that passengers usually feel in rough seas like those of the Drake. So instead of the ship crashing down on each wave, it glides through them, resulting in a much more stable and comfortable ride.

Soon enough, we arrived in Antarctica, and the real magic began.

First stop: Yalour islands. There, amid towering icebergs and glaciers, we disembarked on zodiacs and made our way to land, where we were greeted by thousands of penguins. Adele and Gentoo penguins waddled around, unbothered by our presence, offering us the chance to get up close to these adorable creatures. I’ve seen penguins on TV, but nothing prepared me for the joy of watching them slide on their bellies across the snow and dive gracefully into the icy waters. It was so refreshing to watch them completely unbothered by our presence.

But it wasn’t just the penguins that stole the show. There were seals lounging on ice floes, and whales spouting in the distance, their massive bodies breaching the surface in a breathtaking display of nature’s power. Every day we set out on a new adventure—whether it was hiking on a snowy hilltop, photographing icebergs in all their blue and white splendor, or simply sitting in awe onboard zodiac excursions as we watched wildlife interact.

Each excursion felt like stepping into a world frozen in time, a place where nature is still the dominant force, untouched by humans.

Stepping onto the Antarctic Peninsula

Stepping onto the Antarctic Peninsula for the first time is like landing on another planet—one that’s blindingly white, breathtakingly vast, and completely untamed.

As my boots crunched into the snow, there’s a deep silence. It's not just quiet—it's absolute. No roads, no cities, no background hum of human life. Just the sound of the wind, the distant crack of calving ice, and the chatter of curious penguins welcoming me like I’m a local.

This is the real Antarctica—the stuff of Shackleton and Scott, and past great explorers of Antarctica. As I am standing where few have ever been, there’s a powerful emotional undercurrent. For me it’s the culmination of a lifelong dream, a place that seemed so unreachable and now I am here, at the edge of the world, eyes wide open, breathing in air so crisp it feels like the first real breath I have taken.

A Few Tips for Your Antarctic Adventure

While the journey was undoubtedly extraordinary, there are a few things you might want to know before setting sail. Here are some tips to make your trip even more memorable:

Layer Up: Antarctica is cold, but with the right clothing, you'll be comfortable. Aurora Expeditions provides you with great gear, including waterproof boots, and a three in one warm, windproof, and rainproof jacket. I highly recommend bringing your own thermal layers, gloves, and hats. The key is dressing in layers so you can easily adjust to changing conditions.
Pack Light but Smart: Pack efficiently. Aside from the essential warm clothing, bring a good camera with a zoom lens to capture the incredible wildlife (you'll want to snap photos of penguins and whales!). And don’t forget a sturdy pair of binoculars—you’ll want them for spotting distant wildlife from the deck. Life onboard is casual – during the day athletic wear is suitable and at night, change into a comfortable pair of jeans or pants with a nice shirt or sweater.
Prepare for Motion: While the Greg Mortimer is a stable ship, the Drake Passage can get a bit rough. If you're prone to seasickness, it’s a good idea to bring along medication or natural remedies. Its worth being prepared.
Disconnect to Reconnect: One of the best parts of the journey is the opportunity to disconnect from the digital world. There’s limited internet access, so take this as a chance to truly immerse yourself in the present. The landscapes, wildlife, and experiences you’ll have are all that matter.
Stay Hydrated and Rested: It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement but remember to drink plenty of water and get enough sleep. There’s a lot to see and do, but it’s important to pace yourself so you can enjoy everything without feeling rushed or fatigued.
Respect the Environment: Antarctica is a fragile place, and every guest aboard the Greg Mortimer must follow strict guidelines to protect its environment. Be mindful of where you step, avoid disturbing the wildlife, and follow all instructions from the expedition team. It's essential that we all do our part to preserve this incredible place for future generations.

As we sailed back to Ushuaia, leaving Antarctica behind, I felt a mixture of awe, gratitude, and a bit of sadness. It was as if I had experienced something so profound that it would forever be etched in my heart. The memories of seeing the sun rise over a vast, icy expanse, hearing the calls of penguins echoing through the quiet, and watching whales breach the surface will stay with me forever.

I pulled into the resort not knowing I was about to be swept into a space that sets the tone for the island’s elevated hospitality. From the second I arrived, it was love at first sight. A bellhop retrieved my bags and valet parked my car literally steps from the lobby, where it stayed, untouched, my entire stay. No hassle. No wait.

A Mediterranean Dream in the Caribbean

As I entered the breezy lobby, I was handed a welcome drink and ushered into a cozy, seated check-in process, personal, unhurried, and deeply thoughtful. The aesthetic? A stunning mix of white and Mediterranean blue, infused with understated elegance. The evening unfolded with beach volleyball, live guitar, and afternoon tea enjoyed from one of many plush chairs available across the beach. At every moment, I felt free to roam, rest, or reach toward something new. What initially felt like a quiet, slightly too-flexible space revealed itself to be a playground for wellness. I realized it wasn’t here to impress me, it was here to support my return to self.

The next morning began with 7AM Tai Chi. Graceful, grounded, and spiritually opening, guided by a masterful instructor who made even my first attempt feel like a sacred ritual. I had the privilege of sailing on the relatively new (launched 2021) Explora Journey I from the International Cruise port in San Pedro in April 2024. Our 6 night sailing was up the coast to San Francisco, Astoria, Victoria and then to Vancouver.

On boarding the ship we found it blends luxury with a relaxed lifestyle-centric atmosphere – you feel like you could be in someone’s living room. The cabins were comfortable with large bathrooms and all the amenities as well as very large balconies. A bottle of champagne in the room greets every traveller.

Sailing with Explora is like stepping into a floating boutique hotel where there is a feeling of spaciousness. You never have to search for a place to sit and relax and watch the world go by. The overall ambiance is serene, yet sophisticated – creating an intimate connection with the sea while still feeling like a curated retreat.

One of the standout highlights, and there were many, was the culinary experience. The food onboard Explora Journeys is exceptional and there is a variety of cuisines, crafted by talented chefs. There is something to satisfy every palate.

Sakura is the Pan Asian fusion restaurant. We dined there 3 out of our 6 nights, it was just that good! Unlike some cruise lines, there is no additional charge for the specialty restaurants and you can pre-book reservations at least once per alternative restaurant.

The Marble & Co. steakhouse had one of the best appetizers with caviar and fingerling potatoes. Honestly, I would book another cruise just for that dish. It is the signature appetizer, and it was amazing.

There is also the main restaurant, the Fil Rouge, and the Med Yacht Club – where you can get tapas before heading off to another dining venue. A full menu is also available at the Med Yacht Club. The emporium Marketplace, which is an all day dining restaurant, features several separate cooking stations with everything from sushi to fresh pasta cooked to order, a charcuterie and fromagerie, boulangerie and patisserie station along with a selection of wines, champagne and beverages to compliment meals throughout the day.

Light snacks, coffee and teas are available throughout the day at a lovely café located mid ship. You definitely won’t be going hungry on this line!

This ship has the only Rolex store at sea – where you can actually purchase a Rolex and take it home with you – they are limited to the number they can sell – but it is definitely a unique experience.

There are Luminaries on each sailing providing informative and unique lectures in the show lounge. Live entertainment and dancing, as well as Ocean wellness are also available. These small luxury ships have it all – from the Steinway player piano in the foyer to the high tea in the Explora Lounge.

This was a wonderful small ship boutique hotel experience – attentive staff and probably the best wifi / internet at sea. I would certainly recommend cruising with Explora to any travellers looking for an elevated experience at sea.
