The dramatic history of the Oberammergau Passion Play began with the promise of a village suffering through the Black Plague in 1632. The town’s population was so depleted by the disease that villagers vowed to perform the Passion of Christ every 10 years going forward, if only their community would be spared further loss. Amazingly, the town was indeed spared.
Since its debut in 1634, residents of Oberammergau have presented the Passion Play, a performance depicting the final stage of Jesus’ life, once every decade for a period of weeks during the summer. 2020 will see the 42nd production of the play, which traditionally takes place on an open-air stage against a backdrop of stunning Bavarian scenery featuring world-class music and costuming.
