Cultural Africa: A Journey Through Morocco

Cultural Africa: A Journey Through Morocco

As an adventure travel specialist, I've planned many trips for clients travelling to Africa. One question I often get asked is, "What is your favourite country?" And answering that is a little like choosing your favourite child!

However, Morocco holds a special place in my heart.

Morocco offers incredibly diverse scenery, from rugged Atlantic coastlines and the majestic Atlas Mountains to traditional Amazigh (Berber) villages and the golden dunes of the Sahara Desert. Beyond its landscapes, Morocco is a country rich in history, culture, cuisine, and unforgettable experiences.

For anyone considering a Moroccan adventure, here are some of the destinations and experiences I would highly recommend.

Marrakech

Walk through this historic, red-walled city and visit the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa square, where you'll find everything from street performers and musicians to a bustling hub of food stalls. Why not try tanjia, a traditional Marrakech specialty of slow-cooked meat prepared in an earthenware vessel with local spices and preserved lemon? For a more hands-on culinary experience, consider a Moroccan cooking class, where you can discover the flavours and techniques behind the country's celebrated cuisine. After a day of exploring the lively souks and winding streets, relax in a traditional hammam, a Moroccan steam bath and cleansing ritual. The Atlas Mountains are also within easy reach of Marrakech, making the city an excellent starting point for anyone wanting to hike through mountain landscapes and visit traditional Amazigh villages.

Fez

Known as one of Morocco's great spiritual and cultural centres, Fez has a history dating back to the 9th century and flourished as an important centre of learning, religion, and craftsmanship in the centuries that followed. Wandering through the bustling, narrow walkways of its historic medina is like stepping back in time. Here, you'll discover traditional leather tanneries alongside local artisans selling beautifully crafted textiles, pottery, and jewellery. Fez is also home to the renowned Fez Festival of World Sacred Music, an annual cultural celebration that brings together musicians and performers from around the world.

Chefchaouen

Nestled in the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco, Chefchaouen is arguably one of the country's most picturesque towns. Known as the "Blue City," its winding streets, stairways, and buildings are painted in beautiful shades of blue, creating a truly unique atmosphere. Spend time wandering through the charming medina, admiring the architecture, and exploring the small local shops. One of my favourite recommendations is to take a walk above the city, where you can enjoy panoramic views of Chefchaouen and watch the sunset over the surrounding mountains.

Merzouga Sahara desert

This will most likely be the highlight of the trip.  The experience is a camel trek though the desert while glamping under the stars with a For many travellers, visiting the Sahara Desert will likely be the highlight of their Moroccan adventure. Near the village of Merzouga, the magnificent Erg Chebbi dunes rise dramatically from the desert landscape, offering an unforgettable introduction to the Sahara. Imagine trekking across the golden dunes by camel as the sun begins to set, before arriving at a desert camp for an evening beneath the stars. For those who enjoy a little comfort alongside their adventure, glamping in the Sahara offers the opportunity to experience the desert's remarkable tranquillity while enjoying traditional Moroccan hospitality and the knowledge of local Bedouin guides.

Essaouiria

Located on Morocco's Atlantic coast, approximately three hours west of Marrakech by road, Essaouira offers a refreshing change of pace from the country's bustling cities. This historic, walled coastal town is known for its vibrant fishing port, ancient medina, and wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. Spend the day exploring the narrow streets, browsing local artisan shops, watching fishermen bring in their daily catch, or enjoying freshly prepared seafood overlooking the ocean. With its coastal breezes, historic ramparts, and laid-back charm, Essaouira is an ideal place to slow down and experience a different side of Morocco.

Ouarzazate/Ait Ben Haddou

Visiting Ouarzazate and nearby Aït Ben Haddou truly feels like stepping back in time. This region is renowned for its traditional earthen architecture, fortified villages, and historic kasbahs that reflect centuries of Moroccan history. Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a particularly remarkable example of a traditional fortified village, or ksar, built using earthen construction techniques. Its distinctive architecture and dramatic desert surroundings have also made it a celebrated filming location for international productions. Exploring these historic structures offers a fascinating glimpse into Morocco's architectural heritage and its role along historic trade routes connecting the Sahara with the rest of the country.

Experience Morocco for Yourself

Whether you're drawn to adventure, history, food, or simply discovering somewhere entirely different, Morocco is a destination that leaves a lasting impression. For inspiration, here is a sample itinerary showcasing some of the most beautiful places and experiences in Morocco that I would highly recommend.
