&Beyond is the world’s leader in luxury experiential travel and safaris. Their roots are in Africa and South Asia, where they run 33 magical safari lodges and camps in the most breathtaking parts of the continent and, through this, sustain hundreds of rural communities and millions of acres of precious, sometimes endangered wildlife land. Known as Kenya’s best loved safari camp, &Beyond Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp offers a quintessential game viewing experience, with sweeping vistas of the Masai Mara or the Sabaringo River. Located where the riverine forest meets the sweeping plains in the path of the awe-inspiring Great Migration, the camp provides an authentic dose of African wildlife, delivered with legendary Kenyan hospitality.

Featured Experience : Staying at the &Beyond Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp

The days are designed to thrill you with intimate wildlife encounters and the nights to spoil you with the drama and romance of Africa.

The Masai Mara National Reserve is home to a vast number of resident
wildlife, as well as home to the annual Great Migration. The migratory wildebeest, zebra, kongoni and topi join abundant elephant, hippo, buffalo, giraffe, lion and cheetah. Leopard and serval are frequently encountered, while endangered black rhino can be found in the dense bush thickets. The Mara River is also famed for its enormous crocodiles, which lay in wait for the wildebeest and zebra during the migration, when more than two million wildebeest and zebra move in search of prime grazing land.

Morning Game Drive

As dawn breaks over the Masai Mara, a gentle tap on your door will wake you to the delights of a new day. Your guide will discuss what you hope to see that day over fragrant tea or coffee and morning biscuits or rusks. Set out in an open 4x4 safari vehicle in the company of your guide. If the Great Migration is passing through the area, your guide will attempt to catch up with it and spend some time in the midst of the massed herds. Your guide will break for a hot drink and a snack to refresh you.

Breakfast

Return to the Camp for a delicious breakfast, with platters of fruit and cheese followed by a selection of hot breakfast dishes. Choose from eggs, oats, waffles or a number of other options. If you prefer, you can take a packed breakfast and prolong your morning game drive.

Lunch

There's time for a quick siesta in one of the hammocks strung around the grounds before lunch.

Afternoon Tea

Over a late afternoon tea, your guide will discuss what you hope to see during the afternoon game drive.

Afternoon Game Drive / Bush Walk

Head off in search of the wildlife once again in the late afternoon. Or, if you prefer, set out on foot along the Mara River or the Oloololo Escarpment and explore the smaller details of the bush along with your guide.

Dinner

Return to the Camp for a mouthwatering dinner served under African skies. Compare notes about the day's adventures with fellow guests or simply relax around a roaring fire.

Conservation & Community at Kichwa Tembo Camp

&Beyond seek to maintain a low impact on the land while deriving high yield for their conservation initiatives by creating very small luxury lodges that support enormous tracts of biodiverse land, which remains untouched. Each &Beyond lodge supports the conservation of wildlife and contributes to its neighbouring communities in one way or another. In addition, they seek to limit our impact in terms of fossil fuels, the use of renewable energy, water and waste management, and recycling.

Collaboration with the Mara Conservancy and Anti-poaching teams

&Beyond Kichwa Tembo management and guides work closely with the Mara Conservancy which is responsible for the sensitive utilisation and habitat management of the region west of the Mara River known as the 'Mara Triangle'. Kichwa Tembo provides logistical support for the valuable anti-poaching and animal rescue team set up by Anne K.Taylor.

Environmental Sensitivity

The Kichwa Tembo Green Team is engaged in the control of invasive alien plants within the camp surrounds and at the Oloololo gate. In an effort to reduce the use of fuel wood, the Green Team makes fuel bricks from waste paper and coal dust. A community-owned vegetable garden (shamba) provides fresh salads and vegetables to the lodge. Maasai women from the nearby Kipas and Ndorobo villages are provided with technical and other support for the establishment of bee hives.

Improving Health and Morale of our Staff and Communities

&Beyond is dedicated to providing its staff with as much information as possible to enable them to achieve freedom from poverty, malnutrition, gender inequity, stigma, HIV/AIDS and TB through its Positive Health programme.

Give More, Take Less

The new camp makes use of the best available technology to reduce the use of fossil fuels, with 183 square metres (1 970 square feet) of solar panelling installed, capable of producing up to 9 400 litres (2 400 gallons) of hot water daily, saving 40 000 litres (10 560 gallons) of diesel per annum, which translates into a saving of 106 tons of CO2.
